Tile Roof vs Slate Roof
By the Quantock Roofing team · Updated 14 June 2026
Tiles and slate are the two most common pitched-roof coverings in the South West. Both can give you a long-lasting, handsome roof — they just suit different homes, budgets and tastes. Here's an honest comparison.
Appearance
Tiles come in many profiles — from flat plain tiles to bold interlocking pantiles — and a wide range of colours. Slate gives a flatter, more uniform, traditional look that suits period and high-end modern homes especially well.
Cost and weight
Concrete tiles are usually the most cost-effective option. Clay tiles cost more but hold their colour beautifully. Natural slate is typically the most expensive and the heaviest, so the structure needs to be suitable. Fibre-cement slate offers the slate look at a lower cost and lighter weight.
Lifespan and maintenance
All of them are low-maintenance when installed properly on a sound structure with good detailing and ventilation. Natural slate can have a very long life; quality tiles last for decades too. The biggest factor in how long any roof lasts is the quality of the installation underneath the covering.
So which should you choose?
